Course Overview:
This course will inform the General Dentist on the science of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the Dentist’s role in managing the airway, and how to create an OSA screening and referral program within their existing practice. Unique insights of airway management will be provided to attendees through presentations from a successful local dental sleep medicine clinician and a Portland-based sleep physician. This dynamic co-presentation will provide unique and intimate insights into the multitude of benefits that Dental Sleep Medicine can provide to a general dental practice, as well as the potential pitfalls that await the uninformed. This will include a discussion on oral appliance case selection, adjunctive therapies, and prevention and management of side effects including dental changes and TMD-related symptoms.

This program will allow participants to begin screening their own patients, and treat them effectively, allowing them to live more vital lives, and perhaps even save some of their lives.

Course Objectives: 

  • Understand the science and pathophysiology of OSA
  • Lean to prevent and manage side effects that may occur from OAT
  • Learn a step-by-step process for managing Sleep Apnea cases from initial consultation to annual follow-up, including useful adjunctive nasal and positional therapies
  • Learn how to develop an effective team-based sleep apnea screening program that will identify and allow for immediate treatment of current patients from the pool of cases that exists in every dental practice
  • Understand the benefits and challenges of using your dental skills to work with local medical teams to co-manage this potentially lethal medical condition
  • Understand the medicolegal limitations under which dentists must practice dental sleep medicine
