Course 2:
Protecting Dental Healthcare Workers and Patients: A Vital Review of Infection Prevention and Control 

Infection prevention is crucial to safeguarding not only healthcare professionals but also patients and visitors in dental settings. This session dives into essential, evidence-based strategies to minimize the spread of infections, addressing real-time risks like exposure to blood, contaminated surfaces, or equipment, and respiratory illnesses.  

With guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the Oregon Board of Dentistry, and Oregon OSHA, the session will explore key infection control topics, ensuring both workers and patients remain safe.  

Topics covered include: 

• The chain of infection  
• Proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) 
• Managing bloodborne exposure incidents effectively 
• Employee immunization requirements 
• Best practices for instrument reprocessing 
• Maintaining and treating dental unit waterlines to prevent contamination
